In a major shake-up of the South Bay’s energy landscape, the San Jose City Council on Tuesday officially approved the creation of a city-run electric utility in response to Pacific Gas & Electric’s questionable track record and demand for more power supply — a decision that could become one of its most consequential this year.San Jose councilmembers voted unanimously to establish a new department called “San Jose Power” that may one day provide electric lines to future development in the city’s downtown and northern neighborhoods around transportation, housing and industrial centers.The city will first study the project’s feasibility, including whether it can produce rates cheaper than PG&E. Two arrested for murder and torture after 2-year-old drowns in Rodeo bathtub

(KRON) -- Two people are in custody after a 2-year-old child drowned in a Rodeo bathtub Monday night, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office said. Destiny Deboe, 22, of Rodeo, and Tyshawn Haywood, 21, of Rodeo, were arrested on suspicion of murder, torture, and felony infliction of injury to a child.Deputies responded to the 300 block of California Street at 8:48 p.m. for the call of a 2-year-old drowning. First responders from the local fire department responded and attempted life-saving measures, but the child died at a hospital, the sheriff's office said. Daycare with a pool ‘doesn’t seem safe’: Questions arise after 2 children drown Deboe and Haywood are both being held on a $1,070,000 bail. The sheriff's office is investigating the case. Two Fremont carjacking incidents cause schools to shelter in place

(KRON) -- Two Fremont elementary schools sheltered in place on Tuesday due to carjacking incidents nearby, the Fremont Police Department said. Juvenile suspects were arrested in both cases. The first incident happened in the area of Sundale Drive and Wall Common at about 1 p.m. Police said the suspects were not able to take the car and were found in a nearby apartment complex. One of the juvenile suspects had a BB gun. South Bay Safeway to close after 67 years Brier Elementary School, located at 39201 Sundale Drive, sheltered in place until the incident was resolved. The school is just a block away from the reported crime.Later Monday afternoon, security cameras alerted police to a carjacked vehicle near Grimmer Boulevard and Automall Parkway. BALTIMORE (AP) — Multiple people were shot at Morgan State University in Baltimore on Tuesday, police said.The Baltimore Police Department said officers were on the scene for an “active shooter situation” on the campus of the historically Black university. The address given for the shooting appeared to match a residential building.“We’re asking everyone to shelter in place and avoid the area,” police said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.Police spokesman Vernon Davis told the Baltimore Banner that at least four people were shot.
